Center for Wireless Communications and Networking

The (CWCN) is focused on next-generation wireless communication systems and networks, which are anticipated to evolve at a speed faster than Moore's law. In simple terms, each new generation of wireless systems will provide much faster data rates at much lower costs, with improved reliability, security, and Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning. The centre hosts a multi-disciplinary group of researchers from the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Dept. of Computer Science (CS) at the University of Victoria (UVic). The researchers closely collaborate on key enabling technologies for the development of new and valuable services for consumers, with an enhanced user experience.

We work on the following highly correlated research areas:

  1. Design of RF Components for Wireless Systems with emphasis on computer-aided analysis and design of front-end systems and components in wireless/RF/microwave communications technology.
  2. Advanced Transmission Techniques including User Cooperation and Relaying focusing on the development of next-generation transmission schemes that achieve great reliability and extreme high spectrum efficiency over wireless channels with affordable complexity
  3. Ultra-wideband (UWB) Communication Techniques for both low data rate and high data rate applications
  4. Radio Resource Management focusing on the radio resource management, network protocol design, and QoS provisioning for next-generation heterogeneous wireless systems
  5. Wireless Access Networks focusing on the study of wireless access technologies in support of emerging multimedia services, new applications, and smooth service handovers
  6. Network Security and Reliability focusing on the development of algorithms and protocols which can ensure a safe and dependable user environment
